We got to meet all of our fellow finalists or nearly all of them before the screening. The Screening itself went great,  Leticia, Aoibheann and I really enjoyed the films and we were really surprised that we got Best Film it is an honour considering the competition we were up against.

It was great to meet Doug Whyte in person, the man behind International Doc Challenge. We had a great time chatting with everyone after wards.

We had a great time in Canada in general, Toronto is a beautiful city, the only bad thing that happened was I fell down the last few steps of the Hotel as we were checking out and twisted my ankle, it took all of Aoibheann’s will power not to burst out laughing and Leticia was upset she missed it. But I braved it out refusing to use the go-cart thing or the wheelchair in the Airport and hobbled all the way home.

In true Whackala style we celebrated the win with a lovely Breakfast/Brunch in one of Toronto’s finest eateries.

Never people to let an opportunity pass us by, it just so happens that “After the Revolution” Whackala’s first documentary project is available for viewing in the Digital Doc Shop at HotDocs. We will be meeting potential distributors, broadcasters and festival programmers to further distribute the film. You can check out the After the Revolution Blog here.
We’ll try to update the Blog from HotDocs but no guaranties. We’ll be busy watching great films and networking our little legs off.

Forty Foot makes it to the Final 13

Whoo Hooo, we did it, we’re on our way to Hot Doc’s.
we have just received word from the Doc Challenge that Forty Foot has been picked as a finalist for this years Doc Challenge.

here is what they said

“During March 5th-9th, 142 filmmakers from 15 countries made short non-fiction films with the assigned theme of “Hope and/or Fear.” The judging process is underway and the 12 finalists will screen at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival on May 9, 2009 at 9pm where the winners will be announced. Stay tuned for the list of finalists!”

“The moment you have all been waiting for: our first round judges have completed their voting which determined the 13 finalists for the 2009 International Documentary Challenge. (Due to a tie there are 13 finalists instead of 12.) There are many, many great films this year. Many more than just 13: in total, 116 films were finished by the deadline and eligible for awards.”

We are chuffed, really excited, and really happy to have had this opportunity. Not bad for five days work now is it?

Fingers crossed for us at Hot Docs and keep checking back well keep you in formed

Return to the Forty Foot

Just this very morning Aoibhen, Leticia and I returned to Sandycove to meet up with the swimmers from the Forty Foot. We just wanted to thank them for their participation in the Doc challenge and also Aoibheann and Leticia had promised that they would take a dip the next time they dropped over. I on the other hand, having made no such promise, would only go as far as taking my gloves off to take photos of the two mermaids.

It was pretty windy today, but very little stops the 11 o’clock club and Aoibheann and Leticia braved the elements in solidarity

The tide was right in today, so the spot we filmed in was completely submerged.

Doc Challenge Day 4

Morning all,
Sorry we didn’t post anything for days 2 & 3 but we have been hard at the cole face cutting and cutting. (when i say We i mean Laticia and Aoibhan, the have been cutting in shifts round the clock, I have been steadily supply Coffee, Tea and cake where necessary).

Were down to very detailed fine cutting now. from five hours of footage to 7 Minutes is quite a challenge but were all enjoying it.

On Day two, Leticia and Aoibhan returned to the Forty Foot to get some early morning shots and pickups. then hme and straight into the editing.

We only have a day and a half left, wish us luck and watch out for the finished product on Monday evening.

An Lar Doc Challenge

Today is the First Day of the International Doc challenge. Whackala joined forces with Aoibheann o’Sullivan, and Max Carpio to become AN LAR.

We all rose bright eyed and bushy tailed and hit the beach. Except for Paul who was distinctly grumpier then usual at that hour of the morning.

We braved the early morning chill (3°) and spent the morning and afternoon filming the incredible people who frequent the 40 Foot in Sandy Cove.
Aoibheann braved the chilly water for the greater good and got some amazing footage.

Were logging the footage as i write this entry and we will be cutting through the night. wish us luck in the days to come and ill keep updating as we go.
